Written on the Padlock: I Heart Indonesia

As the anticipation of the Valentine Day 2011, the developer of Ancol Taman Impian proudly launched their new recreation facility. It is called Dermaga Hati, which is located at the area of Beach Pool Ancol where most tourists usually gather around, have a relax walk, and enjoy the sunset or sunrise. Dermaga Hati literally means the Pier of the Heart.

By only noticing the name of the brand new facility, it is clear that the developer emphasized the strongest word in the world: love. Actually, Dermaga Hati has a special architecture and a function as the wave breaker so that the tourists can safely swim at the beach. Is that only so? Well, not at all. At this site, the developer has provided a special way to celebrate your love. You can express the feeling of your heart to someone you really love on a padlock. The name of your loved one is to be written on this non-rusty padlock. The key then would be flied up with balloons so that it disappears forever. Hence, what’s left is just the locked padlock with your name and your loved one on it. In years to come, you can come back to Dermaga Hati and still be able to find the padlock you left. This is exactly the symbol of everlasting love.

The developer of the most sophisticated dreamland in Indonesia and South Asia argued that they want people to be thankful for love they can share. This kind of love is not only for young couple, but also meaning for love to parents, brothers, sisters, and friends. Love is universal. I can only imagine if Soekarno, the founding father of this country were still alive, whose name would he write on the padlock? My intuitive imagination will say that he would probably write the name of Indonesia.

As the claimer of Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1945, Soekarno might be one of those who love this nation so much. The spirit of Indonesia was flowing in his heart. Even though the colonial government always restricted him, his struggle for independence was still strong. Being imprisoned and even exiled did not stop him to fight for Indonesia. The nationalism fire within his heart was inevitable. Thus, Soekarno is the right figure if we want to talk about nationalism in Indonesia.

The “love padlock” at the Dermaga Hati can actually be considered as the symbol of an everlasting love. This great idea should then be followed with a bigger idea of how to express our love for Indonesia. How many Indonesian will someday come to the Dermaga Hati and write his/her name and Indonesia on the padlock? This is a call of challenge for each one of Indonesian. How much do we love our country?

Love for our own country does mean a lot. It is not only needed in times of war. But, even in this peaceful era, our Tanah Air (motherland) still needs our deepest love. Our love for Indonesia means that we are united as a nation. Our love for Indonesia means that we appreciate heroes who died for independence. Our love for Indonesia means that we do not corrupt. Our love for Indonesia means that we do our best. Doesn’t it all sound hard?

But, that is love all about. We definitely cannot love without giving. We have to give something good to Indonesia. Our contribution, regardless how small it is, is worth for our Nusantara. On the top of that, we are once and forever Indonesian. Just like those padlocks being locked forever, our heart is to be locked for Indonesia forever. Let’s have a sincere love for our nation! Let’s lock our heart for this country! Lastly, are you dare to visit Dermaga Hati and write your name and the name of Indonesia?

I am dare to do so:
